After the devastating loss of her grandmother, Stevie agrees to leave Maine with her boyfriend, Jacob, for work at his friend Duran's Tanzanian eco-tourism camp. Taking a quick resort detour from their journey to the camp, Stevie and Jacob make fast friends with fellow travelers Leo Asher and his girlfriend, Tamsin. However, the excitement of new, chemistry-fused friendships dampens when Stevie becomes certain someone has been creeping inside their cabin while they sleep. There's safety in numbers, though, and Stevie is relieved when she learns that Leo and Tamsin are also headed for Duran's camp. Things then take a dark turn: Leo's focus on Stevie feels oppressive, especially after they learn he's lied about his identity, and suspicion festers among camp residents. After Duran's body is found on the beach, a predator reveals the final moments of a deadly game. Stevie's and Leo's alternating narratives reveal reality-shifting flashbacks, and Nay's vivid descriptions of the African setting highlight Stevie's untraveled alienation and stoke paranoia; a smart page-turner prime for vacation reading. It's six weeks since Stevie Erickson's grandmother Nattie died without a will in Anchorite Bay, Maine, and down-in-the-dumps Stevie, who was running Nattie's pub, is jobless and homeless, in this gripping tale of misadventure abroad from Nay (Hurry Home). Meanwhile, Jacob Jones, Stevie's longtime boyfriend, lands a job as a diver for a camp for eco-tourists on beautiful, secluded Rafiki Island off the coast of Tanzania, which lacks electricity and running water. Jacob insists this adventure will heal their malaise, especially Stevie's. But the long trip begins badly as Stevie feels threatened at their hostel in Nairobi, Kenya, where they strike up an instant friendship with the charming Leo and the glamorous Tamsin, both of whom also happen to be headed to Rafiki. Friendships gives way to flirtations, then to obsessions as Stevie and Jacob's relationship frays and they each become suspicious of Leo and Tamsin. A murder on the normally peaceful island ratchets up tensions. Clever twists and vivid scenery elevate the plot. Nay reliably entertains. Agent: Joe Gersh, Gersh Agency. (July)
