Murder mystery meets The Real Housewives in this biting, domestic, psychological fiction set on New York's Upper East Side. The story flips between the voices of three equally unlikeable, yet compelling women competing to get their eighth-graders, enrolled in an exclusive private school, into the best boarding schools and then colleges. The women are ruthless, and participate in a no-holds-barred anonymous app called UrbanMyth, which allows the neighborhood's wealthy and self-obsessed elite to anonymously post about the intimate details of their lives. (One character refers to it as "digital Xanax.") After someone uses the app to cyberbully one of the women's children, the story takes off at breakneck speed. UrbanMyth is seized by "hacktivists," who reveal the sources behind the juicy postings about extra-marital affairs, fantasy spouse killings, and shoplifting for pleasure. When a husband ends up murdered for real, all three women have a motive. Pity the poor NYPD detective who must solve the crime and navigate this world of urban haves and want-to-haves. In this clever if at times implausible page-turner from Cameron (
Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly.Just One Look ), Heather Quinn, a Wall Street wheeler-dealer turned stay-at-home mom, is cautiously optimistic that all the years of strategizing, volunteering, and sucking up to the right people will vault her academically gifted if socially anxious 13-year-old daughter, Violet, a Manhattan private school student, into an Ivy-feeding boarding school. Then the unthinkable happens. Following a dance at an ultra-exclusive East Side club, a photo of Violet apparently vaping there surfaces on Instagram, along with vicious, viral posts on the anonymous UrbanMyth message board accusing the girl of dealing drugs to her schoolmates. With Violet subsequently threatened with expulsion, Heather turns detective to try to determine who set Violet up, an effort that puts her on a collision course with two rival momzillasâa driven hedge fund managing director and a snobby blue-blood socialiteâespecially once her digging starts to unearth secrets including adultery and blackmail. Fast-paced intrigue spiked with social satire ensues, until the disappointing deus ex machina denouement. Nevertheless, those inclined toward a fizzy cocktail of suspense and schadenfreude should enjoy.Agent: Alexa Stark, Writers House. (May)
