Listeners will laugh out loud with Kate but also fume with anger and perhaps even weep right along with her. She may have it all—the chic fun of old country-house restoration with her family—but home's an expensive shambles. The kids are demanding, manipulative teenagers. Husband Richard's midlife crisis involves leaving a lucrative job for two years to train as a counselor, oblivious that this (plus his own transformation into a pontificating boor) proves disastrous for his own family's mental health. At 49, Kate navigates the ageist job market to keep her family going, shaving her work age to 42, then having liposuction during a lunch break from a lowly job where she once led. Miller's light British accent perfectly complements Kate's resiliency. Her narration uses a dry wit in situations both hideously hilarious and enraging before shifting to evoke Kate's enveloping sadness. Teen surliness and drama is suitably higher pitched. As for Kate's humor-infused angst, listeners will love it. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
